tinyurl.com When Proposition 8 went on the ballot, a majority of voters were for marriage equality. In a matter of a few months, the mormon church set up a front group, the National Organization for Marriage, so that the church’s negative public perception wouldn’t affect their goal of adding discrimination to the California constitution, banning marriage equality. They succeeded, and Prop 8 passed. But the mormon church violated US tax laws in their actions supporting the proposition, and are now up for automatic revocation of their tax-exempt status. August 4, 2010 a federal judge ruled that Prop 8 violated the US constitution, setting a precedent for the rest of the country. The decisions is currently pending appeal.
