why is that? in what aspect of their doctrines are different?

    Yes, there are differences.
    Mostly it’s in their standards/rules rather than basic doctrine.

    I have no idea if this is correct or not but when I think of Southern Baptists I think fire and brimstone and intolerance; I don’t feel that way about other Baptists that I know.

    The Baptists of the South were angry because some their Northern counterparts were avid supporters of the abolitionist movement so some Georgia baptists, many of them slave owners, withdrew from the national convention and the Southern Baptist Convention was born, over the Bible given right to own another human being. Some give the SBC credit for keeping the sentiment alive that led to the Civil War. Beside that, they hate Teletubbies and Yoga exercises.
