Well, that’s like saying that the vast majority of drug addicts were first addicted to chocolate. Yes, because the vast majority of the population as a whole are addicted to chocolate.
But the fact that they were/are specifically from very conservative sects is more revealing. It may have to do with the “have the name, you may as well have the game” philosophy that happens when some people decide that they are going to hell anyway, so it doesn’t matter what they do.
That’s one of the many, many problems with Christianity in general and the most extreme sects in particular. The other goes the opposite direction: if they do what they do in the name of God, it’s right and not wrong. Jack the Ripper may have been one such; he killed prostitutes.

The real truth is that the most brutal, violent, and prolific serial killers in America are the several thousand gruesome men who kill unborn babies for a living, and not one of those monsters is a Christian.

True Christians do not kill other humans and do not behave in a way contradictory to how Christ and his Father, Jehovah God, would have us behave.
The ones you speak of are “false Christians”, those who talk the talk but meanwhile do not walk the walk.
It kind of sounds like the fundamentalist or “hardcore” aspect of their faith was the influence, not the religion itself. Non fundamentalists don’t seem to be serial killers.

Well they can’t have been too devout if they ignored the basic core teachings of Christianity.

If you profile serial killers in a Hindu country what religion are they likely to be?
If you profile serial killers in an buddhist country what religion are they likely to be?
If you profile serial killers in an Atheistic Communist regime would you be shocked if they turned out to be Atheists?
you cannot judge a religion by its practitioners for they may not be practising it properly.
You have to look to the original founder; and the original scriptures; to see if they are doing what their religion teaches or whether they are acting of their own accord.
Then and only then can you judge if the religion is at fault or if the people are the problem.
As Jesus and the Apostles never murdered anyone and never commanded the killing of anyone, I would suspect that in the case you mentioned it was the people who were the problem and like I said they can’t have been as devout, fundamentalist or ‘hard-shell’ as you think if they did the opposite of what the founders of Christianity taught and did. On the contrary, they sound like very bad Christians who couldn’t have got it more wrong!
Um.. ok. Here’s the thing: We’re talking about psychopaths here, whose lives are all about lying, deception and manipulation. You can’t believe anything they say on the merit of their word, and part of the psychology of sociopaths and psychopaths is that they work very heard to make other people think they are beyond reproach.
It is such an abnormal mindset that normal people can’t even think like they do.
