Discover Indianapolis Away from the Racetrack

For years whenever my family and I would travel to Indianapolis we would focus our entire vacation on the “main events,” the Indianapolis 500 races. One year the cost savings of flying in before and leaving a few days after the race was large enough to outweigh the extra lodging costs associated, so we found ourselves looking to fill extra time in the city.

As far as things to do, there are plenty of things to do in Indianapolis. It holds a wide variety of attractions downtown and in the surrounding suburban area. We enjoyed the following handful of activities:

- Check out the Earth House. Once a Methodist church this location is now the ‘it place’ to catch a cup of coffee and absorb the Indy culture.

- The Indianapolis Zoo has a new exhibit centered on the nearly extinct Cheetah. If you’re an animal lover at heart this is definitely a must-see.

- Get your shop on at the Indianapolis City Market. Started in 1821 you can get yummy produce, fresh flowers, and a taste of Indianapolis at this authentic farmer’s market.

- Enjoy Indianapolis on a budget at the Indianapolis Art Museum. They even offer free parking so it’s really a “steal of a deal.” I like to check in when I swing back into town to see their rotating special exhibits as well.

Of course Indianapolis boasts a ton more attractions, but those were my favorite so far. There are gaggles of great websites that highlight more sites to see. I’m excited to spend time discovering more “hidden treasures” in Indianapolis.
