How do you explain to children that wasting food, water, electricity, money etc is wrong?

How do you explain to children that wasting food, water, electricity, money etc is wrong?
How do you explain the concept of “wrong”, limited resources, far-reaching-consequences, the inter-connectedness of all life, the environment, the pain of poverty and what goes around comes around?

Is it just easier to say that it is a “sin” and that god will be angry?

Ah yes, the lies to children. Be good or Santa won’t give you presents. Don’t grimace or your face will get stuck like that. Don’t “sin” or God will be angry.

It may work for children, but when we grow up we’re expected to outgrow the childish explanations and look up the true reasons.

Ration things. They waste food at breakfast, they get that much less for lunch. They waste water needlessly they get that much less water for their shower. They waste electricity by leaving lights on, the lights go out that much earlier at night. The get an allowance that includes enough for their needs (school lunch etc.) plus a little extra – let them have some fun. They run out, the get to skip lunch.

IF they are personally affected by waste, they will get the idea!

Show them bills, donate to Save the Children and see real poverty, drive them to bad neighborhoods to show them the things that others don’t have or go to a soup kitchen.
