The Book of Mormon is a sacred text of the Latter Day Saint movement that adherents believe contains writings of ancient prophets who lived on the American continent from approximately 2600 BC to AD 421.[1][2] It was first published in March 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr. as The Book of Mormon: An Account Written by the Hand of Mormon upon Plates Taken from the Plates of Nephi.[3]
According to Smith’s account, and also according to the book’s narrative, the Book of Mormon was originally written in otherwise unknown characters referred to as “reformed Egyptian” engraved on golden plates. Smith claimed that the last prophet to contribute to the book, a man named Moroni, buried it in a hill in present-day New York and then returned to earth in 1827 as an angel,[4] revealing the location of the book to Smith and instructing him to translate and disseminate it as evidence of the restoration of Christ’s true church in the latter days.

It is scripture for Mormons, but I have heard of other denominations using it as they feel it supports the Bible, although they don’t believe it is based on fact. The book of Mormon, is for everyone though. If you have one read it, it is an excellent read and very spiritual.

If you don’t have one, then get one for free:

Yes. It is their religious book along with the “Pearl of Great Price”. They put it on level with the Bible. I think maybe a higher level.
It was written by their false prophet Joseph Smith.
No other denomination uses the book of mormon but possibly the reformed church (reformed church of Jesus Christ) and if you order the book you will be visited by mormon missionaries.

Mormon was a guy’s name. So the book of Mormon is a title like “The Book of Fred”. It is by Mr. Mormon and is for anyone to read. Well, “Mormon” was his first name.

Yes and they often place a higher importance on it then they do on the Bible, as they consider the Bible reliable only as far as its is interpreted correctly.

  • No Chance Without River Euphrates says:

It was written by a man named joseph smith, who then went on to claim he ‘found it’ written on golden plates and was told by some angels to start a religion.

It is supposed to be the story of jesus after he got resurrected – and claims that he came to the american continent and met native americans.

They use it along with the bible and two other books, one called the ‘doctrine and covenants’ and the other called the ‘pearl of great price’, for a grand total of four texts.

Mormonism gets derided as a ‘cult’ due to its relative newness, and questionable origin – however all religions are technically cults, and all of them have about the same amount of evidence to support them (i.e. – none).

No one but Mormons think this book could possibly be anything but a fantasy novel written in the early 1900s.

The original version is online if you want to try to read it. Mark Twain called it cloroform in print, so it’s a tough slog:

  • Zuboko says:

The Book of Mormon has been given to the world to convince everyone “that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations”. It is also meant to help remind every one of “the covenants of the Lord, that they are not cast off forever”

Another thing for you is that the “Mormons” is just a nickname given to the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    Yes it is.

Its not a stupid question at all. The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture just like the Bible (we do believe in the Bible). Anyone can read it and use it. It is another testament of Jesus Christ. I am a convert to the Church and was skeptical of the Book of Mormon just like most other people. However, I read it and prayed to know it was true. If you are afraid of missionaries knocking on your door read it online. You have nothing to lose by trying it. To all those who say “Don’t read it! Its how they get you”, first thats ridiculous and two did they ever think that maybe those people read it and liked it. I have never regretted my decision to read it.
