Learn from others But never spurn your own.” Taras Shevchenko My first 60 or so videos were recorded at St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church—but this one is a little different—this one is about “others.” Recorded at Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville, NY on July 17, 1993, we see Metropolitan Laurus of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR)—who marked 50 years in pastoral services this year (see www.synod.com accompanied by many clergy celebrating the Divine Liturgy. This clip is of the Little Entrance, a procession during which the clergy enter into the sanctuary through the Holy Doors. The origin of these entrances goes back to the early church, when the liturgical books and sacred vessels were kept in special storage rooms for safe keeping and the procession was necessary to bring these objects into the church when needed. Over the centuries, these processions have grown more elaborate, and nowadays are accompanied by incense, candles and liturgical fans. In the liturgical theology of the Orthodox Church, the angels are believed to enter with the clergy into the sanctuary, as evidenced by the prayers which accompany the various entrances. This entrance is quite elaborate when the bishop is present and a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy is being served, since it is at this time that the bishop himself also enters the sanctuary for the first time.
