Is it right for the Mormon Church to spend it’s tithing money to fight against gay marriage?

A question from a reader: Church and state are separate so why are they fighting against civil rights?

Marriage of Miss Rose Carmel and Mr Solly Gershcowit (1925)

New video:

This film is showing in Oy Britannia, a new Mediatheque collection uncovering insights, injustices and hidden histories across a century of Jewish representation on British screens – www.bfi.org.uk For a couple with such Jewish-sounding surnames, the wedding celebrations of Miss Carmel and Mr Gerschcowit are distinctly secular in flavour. In fact, the 20s are far more in evidence than Judaism: the music comes courtesy of the San Diego Dance Band, the female guests sport flapper dresses and bobs, and the dancing is more ‘Strictly’ than ’shtetl’. But look beyond the blushing bride for a magical glimpse of the East End’s rag trade, and while the young women channel Tallulah Bankhead, the young men grin nervously in their stiff dark suits, eternal bar mitzvah boys. Watch out for the boy showing off for the camera at the reception – once youve spotted him, its hard to look at anyone else. As expected, opponents of equality, led by the National Organization for Marriage and the Catholic Church, petitioned to have those rights put to a vote by referendum. This film chronicles the final days of the on-the-ground campaign to protect marriage equality in Maine. The Democratic National Committee ignored the fight to protect marriage for all couples in Maine, neglecting to donate funds to the cause (even though they reportedly raised over a million dollars from gay donors in June of this year) or to mobilize potentially thousands of volunteers through its Organizing for America arm. The DNC even sent emails to voters in Maine urging them to help with Jon Corzine’s failed gubernatorial reelection in New Jersey, potentially diverting needed volunteers, but also showing that they deemed the fight for marriage equality unworthy of their attention. President Obama never acknowledged the NO ON ONE campaign. If marriage equality is to be fought for on a state-by-state

Can a marriage really work if man and wife have different religious beliefs?

A question from a reader: especially if one becomes like a born again christian fanatic and was not that way when they married, while the other was a Catholic when they married and still remains a catholic…albeit not a very religious one.

What is the difference between the Mormon idea of marriage and traditional marriage?

A question from a reader: If you know of another religion that also thinks of marriage outside of the norm, I would be interested in your response as well.

Why is McCain ignoring that Romney & the Mormon Church is seeking to overturn gay marriage rights?

A question from a reader: . . . and the initiative on the presidential ballot (Proposition 8), that the Mormons are promoting in their churches, like just last Sunday with their memo from their President Monson?

I though non-profit churches were not suppose to have anything to do with politics, and that they are not suppose to send out political memos and political letters to their congregations. Looks like the Mormons are going to try and squash the marriage rights of gay and lesbians in California, and the Republicans are helping them.

Interesting stuff.

Are your religious beliefs the only reason you are against same sex marriage?

A question from a reader: If you are, say, a Christian who is against same sex marriage, are your religious beliefs the reason? Or is there something else?

What is it?

Aside from religious arguments are there any arguments against gay marriage?

A question from a reader: The only arguments I have ever heard against gay marriage are of these types:
1. They focus on the religious nature of gay marriage. (“In verse so-and-so it says this and that”).
2. They claim that the meaning of marriage is purely denotative and that “marriage is an institution that can only be between a man and a woman.”
3. On a whim, they decide that it is not natural.

Are there any arguments BESIDES these? These, after all, aren’t the most effective or reasonable arguments.
