Celebration Of Russian Orthodox Day Of Epiphany Not So Celebratory After 117 Rushed To Hospital
Feb 16, 2010 – Ironically, this took place during the Russian Orthodox day of Epiphany – and the well in question had just been blessed by the Priest. This well was just outside the Epiphany Cathedral in the center of Irkutsk, which left many in the congregation wondering just what they had been blessed with.
Cryptosporidium is a food and waterborne illness that causes stomach flu like symptoms. Individuals who are infected may have diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and abdominal cramps. During this celebration, 117 were rushed to the hospital, and 48 of these were children. The cause has yet to be determined, according to Vladimir Salovarov who is a spokesman for the Irkutsk Investigative Committee. Safe water is not usually scarce in this city, which leaves many wondering just how the well water became contaminated.
While these people were contaminated through contaminated water, many people become ill with Cryptosporidium through foods that are eaten. Those who are infected may prepare foods without taking proper measures to make certain they do not spread the infection. Restaurants, cruise ships, day cares, nursing homes and other places where large groups of people congregate are particularly susceptible to outbreaks of Cryptosporidium.
If an individual is infected with Cryptosporidium, they may visit the toilet and fail to wash their hands properly. This increases the risk that the foods they prepare will become contaminated. Individuals who suspect they have food poisoning after eating contaminated foods prepared or manufactured by others should see a doctor. Individuals at high risk may become seriously ill, or possibly develop fatal complications.
