What does “sin” mean? Is it something that god dislikes and forbids?

What does “sin” mean? Is it something that god dislikes and forbids?
Do you really believe that there are different Creator gods for each religion? Is there a separate god who created Christians and a separate god who created Buddhists?

Do you think that these “gods” fight with each other when a person converts from Christianity to Buddhism? Kind of like, “How dare you poach upon one of my creations?”.

So then is it a sin to marry outside your religion? Will “your” god scold you for associating with humans made by other gods? What is the basis for this ridiculous belief of sin?

A sin is a transgression of divine law. That is, breaking the laws created by God. Of course, it’s impossible to know whether or not a person really has sinned, since there is no way to determine if the law was actually divinely inspired. It’s more likely that it was created by men to control others.

Acts based on lies are sins. Change your mind to truth and you change your life. But you can do it only if you ask God for truth.

“Sin” is made up by culture. There is no such thing as ‘sin” anymore than there is a big black line on the ground when you cross from one state to another. It’s a mental construction.

What there is, is skillful and unskillful actions, both of which have consequences. Many so-called ‘sins’ might in fact be a good idea to avoid, for practical reasons. This is why culture makes them up into taboos and prohibitions.

But what is sinful to one culture may be perfectly normal to another.

  • Mariel says:

Sin occurs when our physical drives, instincts and desires are given precedence over our spiritual aspirations.
The individual ego is often at odds with the group dynamic.
When we act with love toward ourselves, and toward one another, and to whatever your understanding of a higher spiritual power is at work in our world, then you are filled with the spirit of God no matter what you call yourself.
When we act without love toward ourselves (harmful behaviors), when we hurt others or are indifferent to their suffering, then we “sin”. The names of “sins” may be labeled differently in various cultures, but our actions or inactions that cause suffering to others are “sins.”

Sins can also be reconciled through love. Forgiveness takes a LOT of love. God has plenty. Human beings find it more difficult to forgive because not all of us are filled with love for one another. We find it hard to forgive ourselves, and to forgive others, but God gives us the means to reconcile our spirits when we are truly sorry and want to make amends.

There is only one Creator. God may be known by different names and has spoken to humanity in all cultures, languages and throughout the ages. You will know God through love.

    1 John 4:8
“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Jesus Christ: “Love one another as I have loved you.” “Judge not lest thou shall be judged.”
When you tend to the needs of the least of our brothers, then you tend to me; when you ignore their needs, you ignore me. etc.

You create a sin when you break one of the God Yahweh’s Mosaic Laws or Ten Commandments. But since Jesus freed us from The Law we are free to do what we want and remain sinless.

  • deea says:

“Sin” lies not in violation of some ethical rules, but the alienation of true life, is a way of existence against existence, against nature that fragment and corrupt human nature, so “sin” is an existential failure.

  • staci says:

Sin is disobeying God. Every person has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Sin deprecates man from heaven and puts us in hell. That is why Jesus came and died on the cross. His sacrifice gives us the opportunity to ask for forgiveness for our sins. With salvation (asking god into your life to rule your life) we can go to heaven.

  • St Thecla says:

Understand the 10 Commandments of God.

  • Arimesis says:

I really hate referring to a book for knowledge, any knowledge, but Ann Moura wrote that organized religion originated in the Valley of Sind, in India. This was worship in Shiva and Shakti and that as Middle Eastern religions started and took root, they desired to nullify the effects of the Sind religion and therefore taught, ‘look not toward sind’, which was later shortened to, ‘do not sin’.

  • BuddhaLord says:

    Sin means morally wrong.
Sin is the action which harms others or self.

Sin is the action that will take you to wrong end.
Sin can be committed either by body, speech and mind, yes mind too , any harmful thought is also sin.

In Buddhism we only need to deal with self, analyse self & improve self because self is key to everything we need not believe in gods .

    Basis of sin
    ——————
Sin is related to moral code of conduct. By doing wrong , a person may increase his/her suffering , by harming others or self. Many pleasures are also sin because these may appear as pleasing but may end in a wrong state later. However I believe that moral code is to enforced voluntarily by self .
