What exactly is Episcopalian christianity?

A question from a reader: I am a christian and I would like to find a church.(I just moved) I don’t like how crazy baptists are,(no offense), but Catholic churches scare me a little bit. I firmly believe in the saints but I don’t want to go to a Catholic church. What is the difference between Catholic and Episcopal? Is Episcopal more laid back?

are you aware that all of those churches that you’ve mentioned are Christians? if you are a Christian, I don’t see why you should be afraid to go to any Christian church.

research the Anglican Communion; there is too much depth to do it justice here. As far as liturgy, there is more variety in the Episcopal Church than with Rome. Some Episcopal churches are high church, some are “broad,” which is middle, and some are low church, or evangelical. Rome doesn’t have this any more. So, how they compare depends on what Episcopal parish you visit. Generally, they are all more liberal than Rome, though.
Contrary to someone else’s opinion, the Episcopal Church recognizes all seven sacraments, not just two; that’s Luther.

The Episcopal Chruch is not run by hate filled ignorant bigots like most other Christian denominations.

The Episcopals use the words of Jesus as an example of a good life, not the totally hate filled lies from Paul.

The Episcopals teach about tolerance and loving your neighbor.

Choose carefully what denomination of Christianity you choose. If you, personally, are not a bigot that will narrow down your possibilities considerably. If you know evolution is fact, that will exclude all the fundie denominations.

If you have to ‘dumb down’ to accept the teachings of that church, you must ask yourself if you really want to dumb down for a religion.

The Episcopal church is the American part of the Anglican community — which is centered in the Church of England. It split from Catholicism at the time of Henry VIII. Theologically and liturgically is remains very similar to the Catholic church in things such as the importance of the Sacraments. It has monks and nuns. It does not recognize the primacy of the Pope. It is much more liberal on the issues of abortion and human sexuality.

Episcopal is the American offshoot of the Church of England. The differences from the Catholic Church are numerous. The Catholic Church is the one Church founded by Jesus Christ for all mankind, and teaches the fullness of Christian truth. The Episcopal Church is just one more unauthorized manmade Protestant sect. It also has become one of the most liberal churches that call themselves “Christian”, ordaining women, having openly homosexual bishops, supporting abortion, etc. Why don’t you go to the true Christian Church and see if there is actually anything to be afraid of (there isn’t).

Well Episcopal might be what you are looking for. I used to be Anglican (very, very similar to Epsicopalian) and converted to Catholicism so I have a pretty good idea of the differences.

Episcopalians have the sacraments of baptism and confirmation, Catholics have a total of 7. Catholics believe that the body and blood of Christ are physically present in the Eucharist. Episcopalian communities view this differently, but most think it is a metaphor.

Episcopalian priests can be men or women, gay or straight and can marry or be in homosexual relationships.

Catholics believe only in natural forms of family planning and are pro-life where as Episcopalians are pro-life but believe in contraception, including that which can be abortifacient. (You would not be judged for disagreeing with this, however.)

Catholics and Episcoplians are very similar in that they both:

    - have the same litergical cycle
    - believe in the Apostles creed (the fundamental beliefs of both denominations)
    - are open minded about the relationship between science and religion
    - have a similar design for churches
    - services are very similar
    - believe that all Christians are brothers and sisters in Christ despite our differences.
    - REQUIRE adult initiation of converts through classes inorder to recieve the sacraments (don’t take communion until you have done this)

Hope this helps! Talk to your local Episcopalian Church if you are still interested.
