What is the difference between a Protestant and Lutheran?
A question from a reader: I know, I know. This is going to be a really dumb question and I feel very ignorant for asking.
But what exactly is a Protestant? Is it a member of the Church of England?
And what is a Lutheran?
Please explain! Sorry for the dumb question.
Lutheranism is a protestant group. In the 1500’s a lot of people were upset over the corruption of the Catholic church so they started their own Christian religions, Lutheranism being one of them. The new religions were called protestant religions. So, all Lutherans or protestant, but all protestants are NOT Lutherans.
All Christians, except for Roman Catholics and Orthodoxies, are Protestants. So, all Lutherans are Protestants, but not all Protestants are Lutherans. Some Are Anglicans, Baptists, Presbyterians, Evangelicals, Methodists…..

It’s not dumb at all. Protestants are a grouping a religions. It’s a term that refers to all the Christian sects that broke away from the Catholic Church, for one or another reasons. They all have their own story. Lutherans are one of these sects. In fact, it was the first sect. Martin Luther, a Catholic monk, broke away from the Catholic Church because he felt that the church wasn’t doing enough to combat the evil that was corrupting the church, so he broke away and started his own church, and the Protestant Reformation. About a year after that, the Catholics had their own reformation, and straitened all the bad stuff out.
Protestants are all of the groups that went against (“protested”) the Catholic church in the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s. Lutherans are one group of Protestants along with Reformed, Baptist, Methodist, etc. The term has evolved to refer to pretty much any branch of non-Catholic Christianity.
A member of the Church of England is called an Anglican. They are not considered to be Protestants.
Lutherans are one type of Protestants that identify themselves with the teachings of Martin Luther. They differ from other Protestant branches in teachings on the Sacraments, predestination, Judgment Day, and others.
