As a Baptist, this is an easy one.

Christians believe that Jesus is God, that He died for our sins, and that accepting this gives us the free gift of salvation.

JWs believe that Jesus was an angel, that salvation is through works, and only if you are one of the lucky few.

That’s the key difference. There are others. Cult section of any good Christian bookstore can tell you much more.

  • justbenelson says:

first of all the JW’s have a very shady origin. the lamplighter (the organization that leads the cult) controls every detail of each church. the Bible’s teaching contradicts this.

the JW’s don’t believe Jesus to be equal with God, while the Bible clearly tells us He is.

the JW’s believe they are the 144,000 from the book of revelation and will rule the new earth. the Bible teaches us the 144,000 are Jews.

i’m a baptist by conviction…not because i was raised one.

we believe the Bible’s cannon (all 66 books that make up the Bible) was closed long before the JW’s came to be.

we believe Jesus Christ to be the literal Son of God and that He came to die so that we may live. salvation is only through faith alone in the blood sacrifice of Jesus for the remission of my sin. baptism is a public display to show that i’ve trusted Christ as my savior. communion is nothing more than a picture of what Christ did for me on the cross. i cannot work my way into heaven.

    i hope this helps

Such DOn’t Believe Christ is Our Redeemer.

    JWS ARE A CULT.

  • Sarah says:

I do not know much about Baptists but I think I can tell you some differences.
Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in the trinity
    why?
“But he, being full of holy spirit, gazed into heaven and caught sight of God’s glory and of Jesus standing at God’s right hand, and he said: “Look! I behold the heavens opened up and the Son of man standing at God’s right hand.” “(Acts 7:55,56)

We don’t believe Jesus to be equal with God, but why?
“YOU heard that I said to YOU, I am going away and I am coming [back] to YOU. If YOU loved me, YOU would rejoice that I am going my way to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am.”(John 14:28)

The 144,000 are not literal Jews, they are Israeli symbolic spiritual Israel, the Christian Church.

We believe God has a name, god’s name is Jehovah,
“I am Jehovah. That is my name; and to no one else shall I give my own glory, neither my praise to graven images.”(Isaiah 42:8)
“That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah,
You alone are the Most High over all the earth.”(Psalms 83:18)

We do not believe in the destruction of the earth
“A generation is going, and a generation is coming; but the earth is standing even to time indefinite.”(Ecclesiastes 1:4)

God should be served following the example of Christ
“In fact, to this [course] YOU were called, because even Christ suffered for YOU, leaving YOU a model for YOU to follow his steps closely.”(1 Peter 2:21)

Taking blood into body through mouth or veins violates God’s laws
“For the holy spirit and we ourselves have favored adding no further burden to YOU, except these necessary things, to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication. If YOU carefully keep yourselves from these things, YOU will prosper. Good health to YOU!” “(Acts 15: 28,29)

Those who remain on earth will be of all nations
“And they sing a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals, because you were slaughtered and with your blood you bought persons for God out of EVERY tribe and tongue and people and nation, and you made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God, and they are to rule as kings over the earth.” “(Revelation 5: 9,10)

  • David Auburn says:

You should walk into each one of these churches and ask them. I’m sure neither religion would mind you walking into their doors. If you ask a bunch of people who are just looking to bash, or promote, one idea then you are guaranteed to get the responses that you already got. Go to the sources, that’s always the best way.

As others have pointed out, the most important doctrinal difference between Jehovah’s Witnesses and orthodox Christianity is concerning the person and nature of Jesus Christ.

JW’s misconstrue the words “only begotten,” “beginning” and “firstborn” in the Bible to teach that Jesus was created. The Greek word “monogenes” (only begotten) actually means “unique or one of a kind.” Jesus was uniquely God’s son by nature, meaning that He has the very nature of God. The biblical understanding of “arche,” (beginning, from Rev. 3:14) is “the origin; the active cause.” The biblical meaning of the Greek word “prototokos” (firstborn) is “first in rank” or “preeminent,” NOT “first created.”

The Bible actually teaches that Jesus was from “owlam,” or from everlasting, in Micah 5:2. 1 John 1:2 refers to Jesus as the “ETERNAL life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us.”

The Watchtower Society teaches that, “it is logical to conclude that Michael (the archangel) is none other than Jesus Christ in his heavenly role.” (WDTBRT, p. 219) The Bible says, “For to which of the angels did He ever say, “You are My Son…” (Heb. 1:5).

Mainstream Christians believe in the bodily resurrection of Jesus: Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up”… But He was speaking of the temple of His body. (John 2:19-21) The Watchtower Society teaches that Jesus was not bodily resurrected from the grave, but that “Jehovah God disposed of that body in his own way;” “God caused it to disappear” (TTSMYF, My Book of Bible Stories) and that Jesus, who was recreated as a spirit creature, materialized or manifested different bodies in order to show the disciples he had been raised. (YCLFIPOE, Awake! July 22, 1973).

But Jesus specifically said to his disciples, “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” (Luke 24:39)

JW’s teach that Jesus’ sacrifice was a “corresponding ransom” that paid the price for Adam’s sin so that the rest of us could be free to work for our salvation and eventually grow to perfection during the 1000-year reign of Christ. (WDTBRT) Mainstream Christians believe that Jesus died not only for the sins we inherited from Adam (our sin nature), but also that He died for our personal sins. 1 Pet. 2:24: “and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.”

JW’s don’t believe that Jesus will literally return to the earth. They used to teach that Christ returned invisibly in 1914; now they believe that Jesus began to rule over the earth from heaven in 1914.

As you can see, the Jesus of the Watchtower Society is “another Jesus…a different gospel.” (2 Cor. 11:4)

  • Unsilenced Lioness says:

one has the gospel and one is in a cult
was a Witness and left the cult and now I worship at a Baptist church

Is the Jehovah’s Witness religion Christian?

The answer to the question is, “No. It is not Christian.” Like all non-Christian cults, the Jehovah’s Witness organization distorts the essential doctrines of Christianity. It denies the deity of Christ, His physical resurrection, and salvation by grace. This alone makes it non-Christian. To support its erring doctrines, the Watchtower organization (which is the author and teacher of all official Jehovah’s Witness theology), has even altered the Bible to make it agree with its changing and non-Christian teachings.

Typical with cults that use the Bible to support its position is a host of interpretive errors:

    * Taking verses out of their immediate context.
    * Refusing to read verses in the entire biblical context.
    * Inserting their theological presuppositions into the text.
    * Altering the Biblical text to suit their needs.
    * Latching onto one verse to interpret a host of others.
    * Changing the meanings of words.
    * Proclaiming some passages to be figurative when they contradict their doctrines.
    * Adding to the Word of God.

Additionally, the Jehovah’s Witness organization requires of its members regular weekly attendance at their “Bible Study” meetings where they are repeatedly indoctrinated with anti-Christian teachings. This is done by reading the Watchtower magazine, following along with what it says, reading the questions it asks, and reciting the answers it gives. In other words, the Watchtower Organization carefully trains its members to let the Organization do their thinking for them. For confirmation of this, please read Does the Watchtower organization control the JW’s thinking?

The Witnesses are told they will be persecuted when they go door to door teaching their doctrines. They are further told that this is simply the enemy fighting against God’s organization because they are in “the truth.” So, when someone disagrees with them, they are conditioned to reflect on what the Watchtower has told them. They then feel confirmed in being in God’s true organization on earth (like all cults claim). They are strongly encouraged to have friends and acquaintances that are only JW’s, thereby keeping outside examination to a minimum. They are told to shun those who leave their group, for in this way there is no way to see why someone has left and no way to find out that they are in error from those who have found the truth in Christ. They are conditioned to shy away from any real biblically knowledgeable person. An example of this is frequently found on the Internet. I was once banned from a Jehovah’s Witness chat room after I not only answered their objections to the Trinity and deity of Christ, but challenged them in return. Subsequently, my name was passed around to all other Jehovah’s Witness rooms where I was banned from them as well. This is a frequent occurrence on the Internet where the Jehovah’s Witnesses are alive and well. It is obvious that critical examination of their doctrines is not encouraged by the Watchtower Organization.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses consider themselves to be Christians because they believe they are serving the true and living God. Like many cults, they think they are the only true church on earth. Yet, they deny the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the personhood of the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ physical resurrection, and salvation by grace through faith.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses are discouraged from looking into Jehovah’s Witness history or old Watchtower literature which is replete with contradictions, altered doctrines, and false prophecies. Instead, they are indoctrinated repeatedly against basic Christian doctrines (Trinity, deity of Christ, etc.) and into the notion that they alone are the true servants of God and that all others are either in “Christendom” or simply unbelievers.

Primarily, the Jehovah’s Witness organization is a mind-control organization that uses its people to pass out literature and send in “donations” to the headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.

“Thus the Bible is an organizational book and belongs to the Christian congregation as an organization, not to individuals, regardless of how sincerely they may believe that they can interpret the Bible.”1

The Watchtower organization of the Jehovah’s Witnesses is a non-Christian organization that uses its people to promulgate false doctrines, and collects “contributions” for distribution of a multitudinous amount of literature, and expand its grip into the lives of its members and their families.

    It is a non-Christian cult.

  • My2Cents says:

You’ve asked the question. Are you preparing to look up scriptures found in the Bible? Here goes.

Baptist Christians believe once you baptized you are saved despite what conduct you put on, you are saved. – This is less than 10% truth. -James 2:26.

Baptist Christians believe ALL of them are going to heaven. – This is half truth. -Luke 12:32; Revelation 7:4; 14:1-5; compare Revelation 5:9-10: that only 144,000 humans were bought from the earth to be co-rulers with Jesus Christ. The rest of mankind are the subjection living on earth as Jehovah God has purposed. -Read John 10:16; Psalm 37:9-11, 28-29; Isaiah 65:21-23.

Baptist Christians believe Jesus is the Father (God) himself. – Totally not true. Read Proverbs 8:22-31; Colossians 1-15-17 compare with Luke 18:18-19: “And a certain ruler questioned him, saying: “Good Teacher, by doing what shall I inherit everlasting life?” 19 Jesus said to him: “Why do you call me good? Nobody is good, except one, God.”

Still not convince why Jesus is not the God himself? The Bible says God gave all authorities to Jesus from heaven and on earth. Why would God being the supreme one gave himself authority? Matthew 28:18 says, “And Jesus approached and spoke to them, saying: “All authority has been given me in heaven and on the earth.”

Jesus is going to restore the earth into paradise like the Garden of Eden and bring peace upon the entire earth. Then he return all rulership to his Father, Jehovah God to rule forever. 1 Corinthians 15:24-28 states, “Next, the end, when he (Jesus) hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has brought to nothing all government and all authority and power. 25 For he must rule as king until [God] has put all enemies under his feet. 26 As the last enemy, death is to be brought to nothing. 27 For [God] “subjected all things under his feet.” But when he says that ‘all things have been subjected,’ it is evident that it is with the exception of the one who subjected all things to him. 28 But when all things will have been subjected to him, then the Son himself will also subject himself to the One who subjected all things to him, that God may be all things to everyone.”

I am one of Christian Jehovah’s Witnesses. We believe the whole entire Bible to be the inspired word of God. All scriptures are beneficial for everyone. Jehovah God is not the son Jesus Christ.

(Exodus 3:15) Then God said once more to Moses: “This is what you are to say to the sons of Israel, ‘Jehovah the God of YOUR forefathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to YOU.’ This is my name to time indefinite, and this is the memorial of me to generation after generation.

(Deuteronomy 6:4) “Listen, O Israel: Jehovah our God is one Jehovah.

(Psalm 83:18) That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

(Isaiah 43:10) “YOU are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “even my servant whom I have chosen, in order that YOU may know and have faith in me, and that YOU may understand that I am the same One. Before me there was no God formed, and after me there continued to be none.

(Luke 18:19) Jesus said to him: “Why do you call me good? Nobody is good, except one, God.

(John 14:28) YOU heard that I said to YOU, I am going away and I am coming [back] to YOU. If YOU loved me, YOU would rejoice that I am going my way to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am.

(Luke 22:69) However, from now on the Son of man (Jesus) will be sitting at the powerful right hand of God.”

(Acts 2:33) Therefore because he (Jesus) was exalted to the right hand of God and received the promised holy spirit from the Father, he has poured out this which YOU see and hear.

Don’t forget there are only 2 groups of Christian found in the Bible: Christian Goats and Christian Sheep. Jehovah’s Witnesses are Christian Sheep. Read Matthew 7:21-23; 25:31-46.

No. You must receive the Holy Ghost. Other than that all you have is words. You need the power of God. God saves you. You don’t save yourself. Anyone can say I believe. But God knows who his children are. American Christian vs Christian American. God the Son vs Son of God. Totally totally totally different. She said as a baptist , this is easy. Well as a Christian this is easy. He that believes and is baptized. He comes to baptize you with fire and the holy ghost. And these signs shall follow them that believe. Read it. Then ask yourself is that true. Yes or no. If you say no….. you in trouble. Basically I hope you resemble the church in the bible. Ok. The jews in the ot were jews inwardly if they believed and practiced the torah. Christian are christian is they believe and practice and God who is supposed to be in them is doing some God stuff (holyghost) through them. Even Jesus said I don’t do the works it is the Father in me he does the works. You need the God in you doing the works. Faith without works is dead. If you had the faith of a mustered seed you could move a mountain. But it would not be you it would still be the God in you. You cant even profesy right. cause he aint reveal nothing to you. and so on…..

DO NOT BELIEVE that we are the only ones that will go the heaven but we do believe that you have to be born again thru the blood of Jesus Christ. God is God the Father , God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit. In John 1:1 it says In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, the Word is talking about Jesus. We didnt say that God is the Son of Jesus but Jesus is the Son of God. You need to get your facts straight before passing them on.Matt 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

Before you try to tell people what the Baptists believe you need to ask them first.
