What is the “Jersey Devil?”?
I was watching this show about modern creatures of myth or something like that and I walked out of the room for a few minutes and when I came back I caught they very end of a segment about the “jersey devil.” It looked pretty cool but I missed most of it. What is this creature?

It’s a folk tale of a thing that lives in the pine barrens of Jersey, supposedly. It’s supposed to be some sort of animal like a badger or sumpthin.

I remember watching a special like that a while back, years ago.

There are different versions of the legend, but the way I remember it is: there was a woman in New Jersey, about the 16th or 17th century, who already had six children she could barely care for. When the seventh was coming along, she shouted that it might as well be born a devil for all she cared!

Lo and behold, when he was born, he had hooves and horns, and a tail in some versions. He ran off, lurking in the woods, and sometimes his shriek could be heard.

Or something like that. Like I said, it’s been a while.
