When Something Bad Happens to a Religious Person, How Do They Decide Between These 2 Ideas?

A question from a reader: When something bad happens to a person who believes in God, how do they decide whether God is testing them as part of his plan, or whether they have strayed from God’s plan & are experiencing the consequences for that.
Some religious people say that some bad things happen as part of God’s plan.
Some religious people say that some bad things happen when people stray from God’s plan.
When bad things happen to you, which of these ideas do you choose to say is happening? How do you determine between the two? Thanks for your thoughts!

Well, I’m Muslim. And in Islam we believe in Destiny. That means our whole life is already been planned for us. so yes, everything good and bad that happens is a test.
which ever one god tells us why
god tells us if we have sinned or it is just a part of life
I just go with it’s life and deal with it. Just because I believe in God doesn’t mean my life is going to be perfect and easy. When crap happens I deal with it and am thankful I have the ability to deal with it.
Bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people. The sun shines and the rain falls on both the just and the unjust. ‘ShuutokuTentei’
I think the choice is made by the resounding attitude of their introspection. Low self esteem and guilt = straying from the plan, situation beyond one’s control = the plan.
I do not believe that peoples lives are predetermined. This verse here explains that… Deuteronomy 30:19 “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. Everyday you have a choice between making the right choices and wrong ones.” Some things also you might consider are the laws of cause and effect or time and chance. These both cause good and bad people to suffer. The only plan God has is for everyone to one day be like him. Most will turn to him and see the truth , but some will be wiped off and thrown away with death and it will be as if they never existed, because they just cannot obey God.
