Who can name 3 aspects of “heaven” that have nothing to do with materialism?
I listened to a crazy woman on youtube the other day, Mary K. Baxter, who claims to have been visited by Jesus and given a tour of heaven and hell for no reason except the J-man must have been a little bored.

I’m used to this type of person, she was a big fat, pasty white southern woman with “high hair” and a tone of superiority in her voice (in Jesus’ defense if I had to pick somebody to drag through hell she would be on my top ten list too).

The hilarious part is that when she described heaven, everything she said was about materialism. The “pearly gates” were one enormous pearl (real creative right?) the streets were paved with gold, everybody was dripping with jewelry, Mary was wearing a dress made out of diamonds (obviously she values fashion over comfort, good call Mary), there were trees everywhere growing enormous pieces of fruit and running through the streets everywhere were “little black children” (that’s “southern-speak” for “look at me!, I’m not a racist”), and of course everybody had a soilid gold condominium.

It got me to thinking, “Do theists think of heaven as anything more than their savings account in the sky?” I know I know, “We get to be in god’s presence”, that’s the only non-materialistic thing I’ve ever heard about heaven and I don’t have the foggiest what it entails. So you get to stand there next to god (who you apparently can’t even get too close to because of his shroud of “unapproachable light” so you get to stand somewhere in the vicinity of god and pick fruit with black kids). That sounds fun, for like maybe three minutes, and then you sigh look at your 20 pound diamond watch and realize you have an eternity of this.

The hell part was even funnier, cliche all the way down to the red footy pajamas.

How do you people NOT realize that you’re being conned?

And I’m not even a Christian.

Really now, what’s so wrong with materialism? Just kidding…
The concept of Heaven was designed to get the masses to behave well… in the time of Jesus, most people lived in poverty, working from dawn til dusk, and so the idea of a place where you would be forever rich was very appealing… thus, they would follow the religion in order to reach that place. Every religion has a paradise like that. Just calm down and let people believe what they will.

It’s the same concept with Hell… they needed a way to urge people not to commit sin, and the concept of Hell was the best way to do so.

What concern is it of yours what heaven is like? You’ll have no part in it so why does it bother you? If every Christian was wrong you’d have no part in it, and if every Christian was right you’d have no part in it either.

Happiness, being reunited with loved ones, love, meeting our Savior. In fact, most of the amazing things in Heaven are not material items!

She might have gotten the idea from the book of Revelations, which gives similar accounts. I have often asked the same question, if Jesus said the kingdom of Heaven is for the poor, then why would it be made of all gold and precious stones. Makes absolutely no sense.

One gets conned, if they believe what people say heaven will be like. We have human minds, and we think that we can explain what heaven will be like, but no-one knows, so to think that it can be explained is wrong. Our minds cannot conceive what it will be like.

Heaven in Islam is described as blissful with a white haze like that of the whites of eyes of virgins. A very dreamy place.

  • John1212 says:

Aspects of Heaven that aren’t “materialistic”:
    its
    1 being forever
2 being forever in the presence of God
3 being without sorrow forever. There’s only peace.

As for being conned, since I have had a personal relationship with Almighty God for almost 60 years now, I’d say those who convinced you to not think for yourself conned you. How could you have missed that?

Seek first His Kingdom and righteousness and all these things will be yours.
